I found this rather interesting.
As I was browsing through the intarwebz like I regularly do on random intervals, I came across this tale.
Care to read?
Care to read?
- Spoiler:
- People ask me why I am a vegetarian. I almost invariably say, "Because I am!" That normally cuts the conversation short.
There were times when I would start explaining why ... but the enquirers were almost always meat eaters. Within seconds, they would attempt to put me on the defensive.
Some felt guilty - "I really wish I could do what you do! It would be very hard to survive! It must be so hard for you."
Others remarked, "But you eat vegetables ... what's the difference?"
Sometimes people start conversations but they don't wish to hear what you really have to say. I sense that and I tell them that we don't need to justify our respective beliefs to each other.
I am not a preacher. I don't seek to convert anyone. I have a choice and so do you. If you are sensitive and not open minded, exercise your choice and stop reading right now!
I choose not to eat anything with eyes, limbs, ears, and noses – anything that moves or that will be born with such features. Anything with five senses.
By eating animals, I would be eating someone's mum, dad, son, daughter, brother, sister or partner. On an evolutionary scale, I would have progressed just one step ahead from being a cannibal.
I would be deluding myself by thinking that an animal can be killed humanely so that it doesn't suffer. You can't kill humanely. Humane killing is an argument advanced by morons for morons - not by or for enlightened spiritual beings. You may kid yourself about humane killing to lighten your guilt.
However, killing remains the ultimate sin.
What if someone else murdered the animals on my behalf? Would I eat meat? No. If you get someone else to do your dirty work, your karma is still tainted. In fact, doubly so.
Take, for instance, the wealthy person who adorns himself or herself with ivory. In essence, he or she causes the murder of the elephant. The poacher kills, the designer crafts the ivory, the salesperson sells it. They are all tainted with murder. But the instigator attracts bad karma on a cumulative basis.
If I get the butcher to slaughter an animal for me, in spiritual terms, I would still be the killer.
Look at an animal in the eye. Do you have any compassion? Are you merciful? Do you believe in karma? Do you believe that we are spiritual beings or just glorified omnivores? Do you believe in causing as little harm as possible as you continue your journey to enlightenment?
Do you give a damn?
If yes, then let's be friends and share our bread. If not, pray to God that you are not reincarnated as a cow - and the cow as you!

I've come to believe in being semi - vegetarian.
I only eat the meat from animals that I don't look in the eye.

Gay is happy.
Gay is also the most commonly used word for having a sexual attraction to persons of the same sex.

Re: I found this rather interesting.
You now have a rival.
- Spoiler:
- Vegetarianism is morally wrong. I want to set aside the ‘usual’ arguments for/against vegetarianism. This will not cover health, environmental impact, animal intelligence or self-awareness. These points do not effect where the bigger moral quandary lies.
Let us explore the possibility that a difference can be made. Vegetarians who do not eat meat say that demand can be decreased, and thus can production. This results in lower loss of animal life.
Before fewer cattle are slaughtered, it is likely that the mortality rate would increase instead. Farmers who do not have the revenue to support their livestock will slaughter what they cannot continue to support. Even repurposing a percentage of livestock to production of methane or dairy would not compensate for the loss. With this fresh slaughter, supply for meat will go up and prices will go down.
Let us not think of the loss of animal life if the industry collapsed altogether and meat fell out of favor. Without the industry to supply money to buy feed or grazing land, livestock will not be fed. If this industry collapsed overnight, livestock would starve to death.
Decreasing demand, even gradually, means you are preventing the birth of countless livestock. Let’s focus on that. They will never be born. Is it morally right to decide that something in particular should never exist because you don’t agree with its life cycle? Is not being allowed to experience life at all any better than having your life ended by another species preying on you?
To be clear, these creatures have been serving in this function for literally thousands of years. This is a symbiotic relationship. In so many ways, their strength is our strength. We have depended on them and they depend on us. If things were different, we’d need to morally accept the lack of proliferation of the species or even their very existence as we know them today. If those that are left are released into the wild, the impact they would have on the ecosystem would also be profound. It would be horrible to attempt to correct a mistake and only make things much worse in the process.
Animal cruelty is a terrible thing. I agree that our livestock—as with all life—should be treated respectfully, and not be abused. It is my opinion that those who express their passion over being vegetarian should repurpose their energy to that end. They are boasting the morality of doing something that would lead to the destruction of these species. All the while, millions of animals are being abused. Even if you have health, religious, spiritual or simple dietary preference (ie flavor/texture) concerns, please consider the moral implications of what happens to our livestock.

You've forgotten the environmental detriments to having a soy-based diet.
